Inspiring story of Aanchal Thakur, who won India’s first international medal in Skiing

Today is a historic day for India, as Aanchal Thakur has become the first Indian to win an international medal in skiing. She won the bronze medal at the prestigious Alphine Ejder 3200 Cup organised by the Federation Internationale de Ski (FIS)- skiing's international governing body — at the Palandoken Ski Centre in Erzurum in Turkey. This medal came in the Slalom race category.
Hailing from Manali, Himachal Pradesh this win is a dream come true for Aanchal. Exhilarating with happiness, she said that it was a result of months of training. Meanwhile, her father and the secretary-general of the Winter Games Federation of India (WGFI), Roshan Thakur said, that this could be the breakthrough for the sport in India.
Now as the young girl is making her dreams come through, we thought why not tell you more about her. Here is everything you need to know about her journey:
Financial support
We all know skiing is not a popular sport in India so it was tough for Aanchal to find sponsors. Her entire journey has been financed by her father or FIS. Moreover, her father told that there has been NO monetary support from the Centre.

Her training
Hailing from Burua, a small village in Manali. She learnt the ropes from her father and later received training from Heera Lal, a former Olympian, who honed her skills.

Previous competitions
Aanchal has represented India at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympics that were held in Innsbruck and Aphine skiing- Girl's Slalom and Girl’s Giant Slalom events.

Future plans
Roshan Thakur hopes to see Aanchal and his brother represent India at the 2018 Winter Olympics and also, hopes that this win would be enough for Aanchal to get financial support from the Centre.

Sports minister Rajyavardhan Rathore took to Twitter to congratulate Aanchal: “Congrats Aanchal Thakur for the Slalom Skiing Bronze in the FIS International Skiing Competition in Turkey. India opens account by a first ever medal in skiing. Well done!” and our Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratualted Aanchal, by writing “Well done @alleaanchal for winning an international medal in skiing! The entire nation is ecstatic on your historic accomplishment at the FIS International Skiing Competition in Turkey. Wishing you the very best for your future endeavours."
