The Indian cricket team captain, Virat Kohli, who has always been the perfect youth icon, has yet again made his way to the Forbes’s annual list of the world’s 100 highest-paid athletes. Virat Kohli is the only Indian sportsperson to be featured in the list. The athlete is ranked 83rd with an earnings of USD 24 million.
The list was topped by 41-year-old Floyd Mayweather, for the fourth time in the last seven years with USD 285 million earning this year. Surprisingly, the 'World's Highest-Paid Athletes 2018' compilation is an all-male affair with no women being featured in the list! Serena Williams was the only woman to feature in the top 100 last year, but her prize money dropped from USD 8 million to USD 62,000 this year.
Forbes said that tennis' female sportspersons like Li Na, Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams were list regulars but sadly, Li Na retired in 2014 and Maria Sharapova is still dealing with the after effects of a 15-month suspension for using a banned substance. Moreover, Serena William's prize money dropped after she gave birth to her daughter in September.
Kohli is not just India's biggest name when cricket is considered but is also one of the most popular athletes in the World. This year the Indian national cricket board 'The Board of Control for Cricket in India' (BCCI) named Kohli as the player to receive the newly-created A+ contracts, which guarantee an annual retainer of more than USD 1 million.
Though the list of leading athletes consists of players from 11 different sports, yet basketball takes over the list with a top score 40 National Basketball Association (NBA) players among the list, which was up to 32 in 2017.
