Privacy experts were left devastated after acknowledging Facebook's eccentric data-collection policy. Soon after the scandalous data-breach in Facebook, CEO Mark Zuckerberg is ready to face more.
As per the reports, Facebook has patented a system that can activate your phone's microphone, using inaudible signals broadcast via a television, to monitor your television viewing habits. Imagine what all could be done with this technology.
It won't be wrong to say that Facebook is planning to convert your smartphone into a spy. The microphones in every smart-phone are meant to record sound signals and transport it to other devices but now, Facebook is planning to use the microphones in an another way.
As claimed by Facebook, the patent is a way for broadcasters to know exactly who is watching their TV shows or ads and the viewing duration. But the applications of this patent are limitless.
The major application of this patent is described as a system where an audio fingerprint embedded in TV shows or ads would trigger the phone to switch on its microphone.
Reports suggest that this system will help in generating audio profiles of individuals. However, whether to activate this system or not, is not a matter of choice.
Senior staff technologist at the Electronic Frontier Foundation William Budington said, "It’s extremely disconcerting for privacy to have an inaudible beacon as it means they want to make it not obvious to the user that the device is listening."
