Bollywood has been trying its luck with the new biopic genre. With actors like Akshay Kumar and Diljit Dosanjh, who have stunned us all with their brilliant performances, its Raid actor Ajay Devgn's turn to set the stage on fire. According to reports, Ajay Devgn has signed a sports biopic film which will be based on the life of Syed Abdul Rahim, the man who is regarded as the architect of modern Indian football.
Ajay will also be seen in Total Dhamaal
Directed by Anil Sharma and produced by Boney Kapoor, the film will take us through the struggle and journey of Syed Abdul Rahim.
“I was amazed that not many are aware of someone as significant as Syed Abdul Rahim. He’s an unsung hero whose achievements must be saluted. His team had heroes like Chunni Goswami, P.K. Banerjee, Balaram, Franco and Arun Ghosh. It takes someone like Ajay Devgn to play Syed Abdul Rahim. With him on board, I can just hope that our film inspires youngsters to play football, and India soon to bring the World Cup home,” producer Boney Kapoor said in a statement.
Syed Abdul Rahim was a former coach and manager of the Indian national football team under whose guidance India entered the semi-finals of the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Football Tournament. A teacher by profession, Rahim was a leading figure during the golden age of Indian football. He also led the team that defeated South Korea and won the gold medal at the 1962 Asian Games held in Jakarta.
On a related note, the genre of sports biopic is fresh and amazingly attractive in Bollywood. Many directors have been trying this new project such as, Soorma, a biopic on former Indian hockey team captain Sandeep Singh starring Diljit Dosanjh, releases this Friday. It will be followed by Akshay Kumar’s Gold, which chronicles Independent India’s first Olympic gold medal win as a free nation. Akshay’s character in the film is inspired by hockey manager AC Chatterjee.
