Books that shaped Sonam Kapoor’s significant life choices

by TIMC Thursday, February 23, 2017

Sonam Kapoor’s love for books dates back to her early childhood when her mother would read out to her. She reads everywhere– on flights, at home, on vacations. When it comes to reading, she takes active position on social media, often quoting from her favourite authors and icons.
When you read a great book, you plunge deeper into it.
The 31-year-old actress admitted that she would even cry if her mother did not complete the story at bedtime. She feels that all the fiction and even the movies, taught her the need to fall in love. “They tell you nobody’s perfect, but there is always someone perfect for you,” she says. “And once you make a commitment, you make it.” Dig into Sonam's favourite books and get inspired for life.

The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand

Books that shaped Sonam Kapoor’s significant life choices This one influenced Sonam "a lot" in her younger days that she had to re-read it on her Kindle recently. The Fountainhead is a 1943 novel by Ayn Rand about an individualistic young architect Howard Roark. The story follows Roark’s battle to practice modern architecture while opposed by an establishment centered on tradition.

Coco Chanel: The Legend and the Life by Justine Picardie

Books that shaped Sonam Kapoor’s significant life choices This makes the top of Sonam’s list of strong books that advocates feminism and gender equality. The book is an illustrated account of the life of Gabrielle Bonheur ‘Coco’ Chanel, the founder of Chanel brand. The Aisha star often takes to social media to attribute the designer’s words as wisdom. Chanel is one of her feminist icons, that also include Audrey Hepburn.

Books that shaped Sonam Kapoor’s significant life choices The epic narrative of the Kurukshetra War is the “most well written text” for the Raanjhanaa star. She reads it as a book on philosophy and not view it as a religious text. “The overlying theme remains the distinction between the good and bad and if you read it to absorb it, you will learn something from it,” she advised.

The Daughter by Jane Shemilt

Books that shaped Sonam Kapoor’s significant life choices Sonam terms Jane Shemilt’s The Daughter as “a mother’s journey” and a thriller. She probably connects her feminine side with the feelings of the mother who finds out strange things about her daughter. After she disappears, the mother realizes things are not what she thought.

The Mastery Manual by Robin Sharma

Books that shaped Sonam Kapoor’s significant life choices Sonam primarily read fiction beginning with Enid Blytons to Jane Austen, and now is giving non-fiction a chance. While talking with a popular daily, Sonam admitted, “Turning 30 is making me look at books that relate to survival.” Besides Sharma, she had been reading Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl and The Girl with No Name by Marina Chapman.

A Life With Books by Julian Barnes

Books that shaped Sonam Kapoor’s significant life choices Reading and life are apparently not separate but symbiotic. In one of her Instagram post, Sonam echoes Julian Barnes in these words, “When you read a great book, what you are essentially doing is furthering you understanding of life’s subtleties, paradoxes, joys, pains and truths.”

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

Books that shaped Sonam Kapoor’s significant life choices   After her young adventures with Famous Five and Secret Seven and Nancy Drew, Sonam got into Bronte Sisters and then Jane Austen. This was where they taught her a bit about that emotion called love. Her favourite romantic couple is Heathcliff and Catherine from Wuthering Heights. “Jane Eyre is my favourite comfort read of all times! Aren’t dysfunctional love stories the best ones?” she asks delightedly.

Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding

Books that shaped Sonam Kapoor’s significant life choices When she is feeling low, Sonam reads cheesy romantic novels. Helen Fielding’s Bridget Jones’s Diary comes in handy, for obvious reasons. Sonam also turns to Judith McNaught’s period romances when the personal weather is not so bright. From her wishlist, she would like to meet American author Jhumpa Lahiri. The Neerja actor’s pleasure for reading, however, is not confined to her home and personal space. Sonam has been seen taking initiatives to read to children or launch books at international festivals. She has also recently decided to write book reviews on her newly launched phone app.
