Rabbits are one of the cutest and playful animals, and just like other pets, rabbits too require proper care. With nearly 50 breeds recognized all over the World, rabbits come in all sizes and colours, and make terrific pets, if they are kept under the right conditions.

Rabbits tend to get grumpy if someone intrudes in their space

After cats and dogs, rabbits are the third most popular pet in the United States. If you are trying to decide whether this fluffy little creature is suitable for you as a pet or not, there are certain things that you must take into account before adopting a bunny.

Time and Commitment

Rabbits like company and they thrive for attention. They are generally happy when someone is home to play with them and keep them company. Ideally, a rabbit owner should be home just about every day, and should avoid staying out for more than a couple of hours at a time. Unless you plan on being with your pet 24/7, get a pair and not just a single rabbit.

Rabbits require a strict diet including pellet feed and along with it, grass hay, such as timothy or brome, in order to keep their intestinal tract healthy. Food supplies like broccoli, cauliflower, beans or peas should be avoided. Lettuce should also be avoided, as it can cause digestive issues.

Regular Exercise

A busy bunny is a happy bunny! Rabbits are active pets and can get bored easily, and so they need space to run, jump and exercise. Rabbits need lots of exercise, so it’s a good idea to have a space available for them to play. Outdoor play areas are can also be considered but with adequate supervision at all times, since rabbits are vulnerable to predators.

It is important to be well aware of the health problems that the rabbits are prone to as well as the warning signs that require your immediate attention. Rabbits need regular health exams from a veterinarian, in order to protect them from health issues like diarrhoea or anorexia.

Generally, rabbits are considered to be self-cleaning animals, just like cats! However, they need routine brushing to keep their coat clean, smooth and shiny. It is also important to remove their hair promptly in order to prevent the rabbit from eating it.

Rabbits are intelligent, social and comparatively clean pets. With proper time commitment, grooming and regular exercise, you will have a constant companion around you for nearly seven to ten years.
