by Unik Dhandhi, Tuesday, March 13, 2018

A 40 year long film career who is still one of the most awarded actress of Bollywood, Nutan Samarth Bahl was on the heights of her career during the 70s era of Bollywood. She started her career when she was a 14 year old teenager and soon her talent was recognized throughout the world.

Kai bar marna aasaan malum hota hai aur jeena mushkil

From slapping a co-star to being the most awarded leading lady of Bollywood, Nutan has lived her life on her own terms and has always been a trendsetter. Here is a glimpse at the way she lived her magnificent life:

Director/poet's eldest daughter, Nutan

Nutan's parents, director/poet Kumarsen Samarth and actor wife Shobhana Samarth, got separated when she was very young. She had to put up with her actress mother Shobhana on which she once mentioned, "My parents separated and I met my father rarely. A few months before he died, when he was ill, I got to be close to him. I wish I had spent more time with him. It is one regret and guilt I can never get over. Not only because I couldn't be the daughter I would have liked to be, but the immense loss that I felt on not being able to spend more years of my life with such a warm, caring, and brilliant man. He could have enriched my life so much."

Uprising of the star, Nutan

Nutan made her Bollywood debut at the age of 14 in the film Humari Beti. And since then she never looked back. By the age of 17, she had already acted in around 20 Bollywood films which made her a well-known artist in the industry. Not only her acting skills but also her bold looks led to this stars uprising.

Daughter of actress Shobhana, Nutan

As earlier mentioned, Nutan had to put up with her mother Shobhana after the separation of her parents. Actress Nutan was also very close to her. Sujata star once said, "I wasn't proud, but rather pleased about being recognized as Shobhana Samarth's daughter. Once during a school show, a teacher who was dressing me up suddenly said, 'you look like Shobhana Samarth. Are you related to her?' I stammered, ‘S..s ..she's my mother.' Years later, my mother met someone in Europe who asked her if she was related to an Indian actress called Nutan!"

Off to Switzerland

In the midst of her career, Nutan decided to give her acting career a break and focus on more important things. After doing a number of films Nutan decided to move to Switzerland, while she was still getting offers. Nutan explained her break, "I was terribly thin and within the industry there was jokes that if you want to draw Nutan, just draw a straight line. My mother even feared that perhaps I had TB. So, at 17, despite the fact that I had so many film offers, my mother sent me to a finishing school in Switzerland. The one year that I spent in Switzerland was the happiest in my life. I could play, study, be free, and catch up with what I missed in my teenage years. I did a secretarial course which has paid dividends several times over. I do my typing, accounts, tax matters, every clerical job required to keep my money matters straight. I learnt French, which I can still speak and write. When I returned to India, I was 40 pounds heavier, and then began a wonderful phase."

Slapping a co-star

Like all the modern actors/actresses, Nutan's life was also surrounded with a number of controversies among which slapping actor Sanjeev Kumar created a lot of buzz at that time. Talking about the incident, she said, "My slapping Sanjeev Kumar became a much-talked about incident. He made a very careless, irresponsible statement about having an affair and that made me furious. I have never been linked with scandals and when he said what he did, I flew off the handle. I had to put him in his place. After I said what I had to, I cooled down and said, 'let's finish the love scene,' and we did."

Mrs Nutan Samarth Bahl

On 11th October 1959, Nutan tied knot with a Lieutenant-Commander of the naval forces, Rajnish Bahl. Both of them had a son, Mohnish Bahl. However she decided to quit acting after marriage but due to her husband's insistence she carried on with her acting career.

Nutan's Cancer

In 1991, Nutan was diagnosed with breast cancer post which she returned the signing amount for the films she had signed. And unfortunately, by February 21, 1991, her cancer had spread to her lungs and she breathed her last at the age of 54.

So, it won't be wrong to say that she lived her life on her own simple terms and in a very earthly manner. Stay tuned for more lifestyle related updates.
