Tips to ease your 'four-legged' family members during Diwali celebrations

by TIMC Monday, October 16, 2017

After waiting for long, Diwali is finally here. For humans, Diwali is a festival of lights and endless celebration but for dogs. Unfortunately, dogs have a sensitive hearing. Therefore, Diwali is nothing but a night filled with blinding flashes, pollution and loud noises for our loved pets.

Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.

Undoubtedly, the ‘fur-babies’ of your family gets scared and uncomfortable while celebrating Diwali. Well! There are ways through which you may help your pets keep calm during Diwali, some of which are listed below:

Keep your pets inside

Dogs and cats are extremely sensitive to loud decibel sounds and the foul smell of crackers. Hence, make sure that they are kept indoors during the Diwali celebrations. Whatever you do, in no way should they be exposed to loud sounds, as this can cause excessive anxiety. Burst low decibel firecrackers if you must, but be warned that fumes from noiseless fireworks too contain chemicals that can lead to long term health issues in pets. So, simply avoid bursting crackers around them.

Keep them away from festive supper

We often treat our pet with festive suppers, but that isn’t always healthy. However, these treats should not include ghee filled Diwali sweets and other fried foods. Such items are not good for their digestive system and can lead to gastric disorders or worse.

Shift your pet's regular routine

Do not venture near places where people are lighting or have already burst firecrackers. To avoid the hustle and bustle of the festivities, walk and feed your pets during the daytime, before the celebrations begin.

Watch what your pets are sniffing

If there’s one thing all dog or cat must love doing, it’s sniffing around new and foreign objects. And one sniff is all it takes to go directly to your pets’ lungs and result in alkalosis, which can causes nausea, muscle spasms and twitching, difficulty breathing and could even lead to shock or put your pets into a coma. This is why you need to be extremely careful that your pet isn’t sniffling gunpowder, which is extremely fine and powdery.

Keep a first aid kit ready

Along with all the safety precautions which you are taking, there is a fair chance of your pet hurting herself/himself, so make it a point to have a first aid kit around. Also, for emergencies, keep the number of your vet handy. You can also ask your vet to prescribe medications like anti-anxiety drugs or sedatives in advance, as a precaution, should your pet show signs of extreme distress during the festivities.

So, for a change this festive season let's try to be gentle on the atmosphere as well as your loved pets by celebrating a cracker-less Diwali. We wish you all, a very happy and safe Diwali!
